DEPUY: TOO LITTLE TOO LATE?

Criticism has mounted towards DePuy Orthopaedics Inc., in light of their failure to act on warnings that were raised back in 2007. Despite concerns being made with regard to the DePuy ASR XL Acetabular System and the DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System, these DePuy hip replacements remained on the market.

The DePuy ASR system was withdrawn from the Australian Market in December 2009. The withdrawal was attributable to “commercial reasons” following the identification of problems by an independent watchdog. Nothing further was done until August 2010 when a recall was issued in the UK.

Could DePuy have done more to ensure that they acted in the best interests of their patients? Is this a case of too little too late? The answer remains to be seen……….
